As a one off OVA by acclaimed director Shinkai Makoto it comes with a rather impressive pedigree. That definitely does not say it is not good. That does not say that it is not enjoyable. The opening and ending sequence was just a simple piano melody, and there wasn’t much beyond that besides space guns being shot, which I suppose was alright.
Slight quibbles about originality, execution, writing, direction, and so on can only go so far. They just simply wanted to be together.Overall: 6/10So did I hate this anime?

The idea of text messaging with cell phones through space is highly amusing. It's about people.And this is where Shinkai succeeds masterfully.
No, did I love it? Directed by Makoto Shinkai and voices by Mika Shinohara, Makoto Shinkai, Sumi Mutoh and Chihiro Suzuki. But I will admit that by the end of it I felt a little something, something in my heart.
The animation and art direction are where Voices of a Distant Star really stand apart. Voices has mechs and starships and war in space. ADV Films I see the score of eight out of ten as something that is good on all levels but is not great on any, and that is all there is to it.

Similar to many of the greatest works in anime, this is exceptional in the way it manages to be both dramatic and restrained by shedding all unnecessary gimmicks and sticking to what it does best: tell a simple story in a powerful way. We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future.Theater box office or somewhere else The animation, while not spectacular, does what it needs to. In the time provided it was mostly focused on their desire to be together and how much they loved each other. I would like to say and add that Makoto Shinkai is my favourite animated director, and I would be lying if I say I didn't cry when I first saw this and that was a little over 4 years ago.
The voice actors do their job well. I wouldn't go so far as to say there is "nothing new under the sun" (also a religious phrase), but gadgets and aliens and new worlds seldom surprise us, let alone result in mind altering experiences.Which leads me to say this of Voices of a Distant Star: there is nothing new here. At Agartha, three of the four carriers equipped with the warp engines which brought the expeditionary force to Sirius have been destroyed. Only 9 left in stock (more on the way). So overall really good. I'm looking forward to more people doing things this way and seeing an emergence of independent animators, whether it's individuals or small groups.The ending theme to the OVA, "Through the Years and Far Away" (Hello, Little Star), was composed by The OVA was adapted into a manga by Makoto Shinkai and illustrated by THEM Anime Review's Carlos Ross said, "The voice-acting is remarkable, the directing is solid, and music is quite competent. As it is only a one episode OVA there isn't a chance to see any back story or flesh out the story any way. Not merely a suspension of disbelief (which is the case with almost all fiction) but an actual moment of "wondering awe." I choose this religious phrase quite deliberately, because it is an almost religious experience the author of a given work is trying to stimulate. Mikako is apparently alone in a hauntingly empty city, trying to contact people through her mobile telephone.
The story of Mikako and Noboro is a bittersweet story about all of us. But they do the job.CharactersUpon reflection, we don't ever know very much about these characters.
