In Peter Weir's thriller Witness, Samuel (Lukas Haas), a young Amish boy, witnesses a murder in the restroom of a Philadelphia bus station. They spent SOO much time on the Amish farm that when they do cut back to the police office, it feels out of place, like it's from another movie that doesn't belong in this one... And the ending was TERRIBLE! The clash of cultures between strict religious sects such as the Amish and other Mennonite orders, and men who live by violence seems to fascinate film producers. The next day, Schaeffer, McFee and Ferguson arrive at the Lapp farm, taking Rachel and Eli hostage as a way of luring Book and Samuel out.

even it`s a pretty old movie with Harrison Ford, it`s still very entertaining. When a young Amish woman and her son get caught up in the murder of an undercover narcotics agent, their saviour turns out to be hardened Philadelphia detective John Book. I rarely watch a movie more than once, but I have watched "Witness" several times. Great film. He offered Kelley and Wallace $25,000 for a one-year option and one rewrite, and an additional $225,000 if the film actually was made. It has not aged one iota. Had just read Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult, and this was the film that gave us another side to understanding the Amish Community. Top 10 movies of all times. The Lapps' neighbor Daniel Hochleitner had hoped to court her and this becomes a cause of friction. It was the number two film at the box office behind the enormous hit Beverly Hills Cop (1984). An ordinary man witnesses a cruel murder and becomes entangled in circumstances out of his control.

Realizing that Samuel and Rachel are now in grave danger, Book orders his partner to remove all traces of the Lapps from his files and drives the boy and his mother back home to Book insists that going to a hospital would allow the corrupt police officers to find him and put Samuel in danger.
Schaeffer then forces Rachel and Eli out of the house at gunpoint; Eli signals to Samuel to ring the farm's bell.
Harrison Ford really does "barely controlled rage" incredibly well, and in terms of that, this scene has to be his finest hour :-)

Visually, a lot of it looks like a Vermeer painting, which is of course part of its charm - but it's surprising how many men like this movie, given that it tells its tale slowly. Picture quality is very good and widescreen and there are multi languages and subtitles including English for the hearing impaired on the copy I have. This film was released in early 1985. Rachel and Samuel travel by train to visit Rachel's sister, which takes them into Philadelphia.
